The unnamed "Corporal" was a senior English officer of the garrison that was under the command of the Magistrate in Lanark. In response to the murder of his wife Murron MacClannough. William Wallace led an uprising by Scottish peasants that slaughtered the entire English garisson and liberated the village. The Magistrate and the Corporal were the only two English that remained inside the garisson fortress when it was captured by the Scotts. The Magistrate was seized and soon afterwards, killed by Wallace-in the same spot and using the same method that was used by the Magistrate to murder Murron prior to the uprising, as a form of justice. It is unknown what happened to the Corporal afterwards but it is possible he was also killed.
